Colonnade

The colonnade was reconstructed from scattered pieces of sculpted stone buried in the sand. The original roof is gone; the modern roof there now serves to protect the rebuilt columns. The forty columns, which perhaps represented the number of provinces (called "nomes") that existed in Djoser's time, look like bunches of reeds and are spaced closer together at the end opposite the entrance in order to give the illusion of greater length to the hall.
