Abu Simbel Revisited

<< Go FIRST to "Abu Simbel" at Splendors

Abu Simbel's four deities, Ptah, Amun-Re, Ramesses II, and Re-Harakhti, are artificially lit in the temple's sanctuary on a "normal" day.

On 20 October as the morning sun streamed into the temple, Ptah (god of the underworld) was in the dark while Ramesses basked in Re's light with Amun-Re.

High on a wall is an unusual drawing of a figure astride a horse. So horses were ridden as well as used to pull chariots.

Over and over again Ramesses told the world how he, his horses, and his chariot were victorious over the hapless Hittites.
